To Art or Not To Art, That Is The Question
May. 1st, 2012 07:39 pmAs I mentioned in my previous post, the
sshg_exchange is running again this year, very soon.
This is an unusual exchange, in that it isn't just fiction, but also potentially art or craft.
Now... when I've signed up before, I've only signed up to produce fiction, because while I'm arty and crafty... I don't feel that my... representational drawing skills are up to the level of quality that this Exchange has shown. And for the life of me, I have no clue how my craft skills could be used to fulfill any of the art prompts I've seen in the Exchange, since art prompts tend to be representational, and I can't see how a bead necklace could be made to look like Severus Snape or Hermione Granger. Or crochet at the simple level I'm at. I don't embroider or do cross-stitch.
And yet... I like doing craft.
So, I ask you, friends, Romans, fellow-Exchange-ers, should I cower in fear as I've done before, or should I put down "art/craft/fiction" when I sign up this year?

Date: 2012-05-01 01:00 pm (UTC)Hermione and Severus sit for a formal portrait with the Orders of Merlin
Hermione, Severus, rose petals....
This is sort of weird – I’d like two panels... the first with Severus preparing his riddle from Book One, with Hermione in mind. The second with Hermione solving it, thinking of him.
I'd like Severus and Hermione in Potions Class (any year). Gen, canon.
Hermione has cut her hair. How does Severus react?
The Granger-Snape Apothecary shop.
As you can see, the art requests tend to be very representational, and I can't see how they can be reinterpreted into craftwork. Can you?
ETA: Okay, I've thought of one thing I could do in that list: I could do the sign for the Granger-Snape Apothecary shop, as digital art. But that's about it.

Date: 2012-05-01 01:32 pm (UTC)I can certainly imagine how a bead necklace might call to mind Snape or Hermione: a piece someone made of beads in their house colours, interspersed with charms representing aspects of their personalities comes to mind.
The same goes for basic crochet. There's a host of things you can do quite simply. Didn't someone do a piece that consisted of squares with books and cauldrons?
So, go for it. But only if you really want to.
