I have never seen Pretender though I am tickled that Jarod improves his impersonation so well. Can John tell them apart?
John can tell them apart quite easily, since Jarod doesn't physically look like Sherlock.
A Pretender is someone with genius-level intuition/empathy as well as brains. The upshot of that is that a Pretender can learn things very quickly, and also, when they reenact a situation, can put themselves in the protagonist's shoes well enough to feel what they would have been feeling, and make deductions from that. So, as I said, a sort of emotional genius. It isn't an instant empathy thing, but impressive nonetheless. Jarod combines this empathy with a huge amount of naivety, because he spent most of his life locked up by the people who were exploiting him.
