Works That I Wish Would Progress
Oct. 18th, 2009 08:42 pmI try to avoid reading works-in-progress, because it's so frustrating waiting until they are finished. But in spite of that, I have been sucked in to reading them every now and then, and I keep on accumulating them. So I thought I'd share my frustration (and who, knows, encourage some authors) by giving my current list of works-in-progress that I have started reading and wish the author would update and finish soon.
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer/Stargate
* Daniel's Daughter by Rudes Mom
SG-1's Dr. Jackson has a daughter. She's short, blonde, and a vampire slayer. Too bad nobody told him.
A fun, well-done crossover with near-misses and misunderstandings.
Doctor Who
* Maestro by HonorH
Torchwood is given custody of a powerful object whose ownership is in dispute. With great responsibility comes large problems, and when Rose finds herself in a sticky spot, she's rescued by the most unlikely friend imaginable. Unfortunately, she might have just gone from the frying pan into the fire.
Alt!Jacobi!Master in a universe where the Doctor went evil and the Master didn't.
* Map of the Stars (2) Our Velocity by Zauberer Sirin
The Master figures out that if he acts like they are already dating, Martha is going to end up believing they are actually dating. (sequel to "Now We Have A Map of the Stars")
Because it's a sequel, naturally. Warning: is adult rated.
* Pockets by GuiltySecret79
Jack gets an unexpected visitor.
A Donna!fixit story. I'm not sure if this is finished or not; it could stand alone as a vignette, but the author has marked it as incomplete, which seems to indicate that they intend to write more.
* A Shift in Reality by Kesomon
Since Farrinham, the Doctor's been restless. Splitting headaches, blackouts, and the same phantom memory, speaking the same unfinished request. Just what is going on? AU post Human Nature/The Family of Blood. No spoilers.
A very intriguing AU; I won't say more because that would spoil it. Alas, only two chapters, and it hasn't been updated in a while.
Harry Potter
* Back Again, Harry? by Jedi Buttercup
Harry makes a different choice in King's Cross, and is given the double-edged gift of a second chance.
A time-travel story with a mature but not Super Harry, who is aware that being a child again means that people aren't going to believe him, or worse. I know
jedibuttercup is intending to update soonish; no hassling intended, but this is still in the list because it's a WIP I enjoy which I am really looking forward to being finished.
* The Best Revenge by Arsinoe de Blassenville
AU. Yes, the old Snape retrieves Harry from the Dursleys formula. I just had to write one. Everything changes, because the best revenge is living well. T for Mentor Snape's occasional naughty language. Supportive Minerva.
A good Mentor!Snape story, with Harry sorted into... somewhere other than Gryffindor. Fortunately the author seems to be updating this fairly frequently.
* Equilibrium and Evolution (2) Evolution by Twinheart
SEQUEL TO EQUILIBRIUM : A mentoring relationship is developing between young wizard Harry Potter and his dour Potions Professor, Severus Snape; but away from Hogwarts, Harry's life is not all it seems. (Summer before Year Two -- CofS).
Because it's a sequel to a story I liked.
* Pet Project by Caeria
Hermione overhears something she shouldn't concerning Professor Snape and decides that maybe the House-elves aren't the only ones in need of protection.
This one has a lot of awesome stuff in it; a crusading Hermione, a sneaky and manipulative Snape, and some really interesting worldbuilding about House Elves, Dark Magic and Arithmancy. I really really want this completed soon.
* Rectifier by Niger Aquila
In one world, the war against Lord Voldemort is raging. In another, a Hogwarts professor named Tom Riddle decides to put his theory on alternate worlds to test and embarks on a trip that quickly turns into a disaster. AU sixth year. DH compliant.
A very intriguing premise, and it looks like the author is taking it in an even more interesting direction, in regards to the nature of Horcruxes and how that affected Tom Riddle.
* Resonance (3) Resolution by GreenGecko
Sequel to Resonance and Revolution. Harry enters his second year as an Auror Apprentice. Snape's wedding looms, and Harry's odd new powers mature, creating mayhem, perilous temptations, and opportunities to gain real wisdom.
Because it's a sequel to two stories I liked.
* River of Dreams by Tajjas
When Severus Snape finds a certain brat-who-lived out after curfew the year after Voldemort's return, it starts a chain of events that he wouldn't have imagined in his wildest dreams. Or nightmares.
Highly recced by lots of people, and I can see why. But I wish it was finished.
* Trading My Sorrows by ShadowBallad
Snape happens upon a wizarding church when fleeing from Death Eaters. Basically, he becomes a Christian and returns to Hogwarts a changed man. Warning: religious themes.
Yes, with a summary like that, many would be tempted to run away, and I wouldn't blame them. But I was pleasantly surprised; it wasn't dire, it wasn't superficial, and it wasn't preachy. It's a challenging subject, and I admire the author's bravery for tackling it.
Harry Potter/Doctor Who
* Doctor Who and the Defense Against the Dark Arts by Lavanya Six
The Doctor is a fan of the Harry Potter books, sure, but he never imagined he'd find himself trapped inside one. Someone's trying to play him, but the Doctor isn't having it. Now having a good time while he's there? THAT he doesn't mind.
This opens with very grim foreshadowing, so much so that it may well be that there isn't a happy ending. But I hope there is. Meanwhile, the whole interaction of the Doctor and Donna with Hogwarts is delightful.

*pokes document* I have about 1,300 words of the next chapter? I think I've finally figured out how to connect the cliffhanger I left it with, with the major plot element that insisted on happening next. =)
