The saga continues...

So... it seems they saved the cheerleader. Unless, of course, it was the other cheerleader they were supposed to save. I did have a short worry about that possibility. I don't think so, though. Because we know that Peter altered the future because the original image of the cheerleader being stalked in the stadium, she was alone, but when it happened, she was with Peter. I love how they got the image of that.

How naive was Claire's father to think he just had to forbid her to go to Homecoming and that would save her life?

In the Heroic Journey, running away from Fate may simply take you closer to your doom. Fate must be vanquished.

I was afraid that when Peter saw the newspaper about the bitch-queen being a hero, that he'd fail to save Claire because he was trying to save the other cheerleader. But thank goodness, Sylar seemed to have made the same mistake, and attacked the other cheerleader first. Which means that Sylar doesn't have the "super power" of being able to detect people with super powers. Presumably this means that the reason he's a step ahead of everyone is simply because he stole Chandra Surresh's work or something like that.

When I saw the photo of Peter lying in a pool of blood at the homecoming, a few different thoughts went through my head:
- oh, he's going to die saving Claire, I'll miss him
- oh, he's going to die unless he saves Claire
- maybe he isn't actually dead
I was sure it was Peter, though, even though he kept on saying that perhaps it wasn't him. I think he actually didn't care if it was him, he only said that to reassure others.

When he told Claire to run, I figured, yeah, he's been near her long enough to have absorbed her invincibility, so I wasn't at all surprised when he wasn't dead. He seems to be getting better at this.
But how did Sylar survive the fall?

Yep, I was right, Eden has mind-control powers.(*)

One of Isaac Mendez's paintings showed Hiro and Ando looking up at the blood-spattered "Homecoming" banner. Perhaps this means that they'll actually turn up there, too late of course, and not knowing what happened because Peter's been arrested. Of course Claire's dad doesn't care if Peter's been arrested, he just doesn't want people asking questions about Claire.

And Hiro is going to fail to save the waitress. How sad.

Sylar will either escape, or he won't. He's going to be mighty difficult to keep.

But the next big task, I think, is to stop Tom blowing up New York. That painting of the being of flame, that's got to be Tom.

Jessica is still a sociopath.

It's so fun hearing your reactions to these. :-) I remember really enjoying this episode, but wow...wait till the next one. And the one after that.

One of the nice things about this show is that they manage to have a good balance, even though there are so many characters to keep track of. Or maybe I'm just fortunate in that I like Pete, Hiro and Matt muchly, which means that any given episode is probably going to be focusing on at least one of my faves.

I think Pete counts as the most heroic, because he chose to try to Save The Cheerleader even though he knew he was probably going to die. That's totally Heroic! Lay down your life stuff.

I agree about there always being a storyline with ONE of my favorites (I also like Peter, Hiro, and Matt, but have a soft spot for Claire and her father and that mixed-up-ness also).

At this point, absolutely. And that's what I love about Peter, despite his occasional whining and "emo hair" (I actually like his bangs; makes him look like he belongs in a comic book): he's got the guts to do whatever's necessary, even if it kills him.

I think Hiro and Pete have the core of heroism in this bunch. Their approach to heroism is slightly different: Pete, as you say, has "the guts to do whatever's necessary" -- he seems to be led by his gut, so to speak. His gut feeling that there's more to life, that he himself can do more, that what he was doing before wasn't what he was really meant to be doing. And of course, that being a shark like his brother is absolutely NOT what he wants to be involved in.

Hiro is a romantic idealist, he has an ideal of heroism that he strives towards -- it doesn't matter that his idea of heroism comes from comic books, it's still heroism. Hiro's attitude is "I have super powers, therefore I must behave like a hero." With great power comes great responsibility.

Yes, yes, yes--I agree completely. And there are advantages and disadvantages to each approach. I think that Hiro will be immune to a lot of manipulation because his motives are so pure, and he keeps himself to such a straight path. Otoh, he's also pretty naive in his idealism, and we've seen him nearly duped at least once.

Peter is deeply motivated to do heroic things, to use that destiny to escape becoming like everyone else around him...less than what they can be. He's almost like Eowyn in that respect (or Neal, from Dead Poet's Society), and there's a sense of the potentially tragic about him. Everything he feels and does is so intense. (*bites tongue on Petrelli-related spoilers* We'll have to talk about Nathan later.)
