I've been getting various things to work:

  • quickswitch has been set up, though the acid test will be when I take the laptop to work and see if I can change the network settings with the command.
  • I now have the desktop PC set up to be a mirror/server/proxy for GenToo update stuff! Whee! I didn't have that set up for the previous laptop, which meant I had to download stuff twice when I was updating.
  • I've set up the laptop so that I can easily start up either Fvwm or Ion as the window manager, and have set up my colour changing stuff so that both window managers will have a different colour scheme depending on the date. I had to change stuff around for both window managers since the new laptop has a different screen size from both the desktop and the old laptop, and I wanted to thus make the layout custom for the 1280x768 screen size. I've also installed my background changing script.

Still a few more things to set up. I need to have the same perl development environment and website development environment at least.

I'm not sure whether or not I want to battle with the wireless, unsure as I am how difficult it will be to get working.

I'm also wondering whether I want to have a go at setting up Qingy; I've never used it before, but it looks kinda cool.

I never realized getting a new laptop could be so complicated. When I got mine, for the first week I couldn't get it to start at all. But once that was solved, I just took it as it was. I probably only know about 5% of what it can do. Who is there to ask, in this far away place? But it does what I want it to. And I have the pleasure of finding out new things years after I got it.
