More Marvel Thoughts
Dec. 2nd, 2019 08:19 pm"Odin's A+ Parenting" is a tag on AO3. It is usually meant sarcastically. And, yeah. If "what you should do as a father" and "what you should do as a King" are opposites, UR Doing It Rong. You're doing both things wrong: parent!fail and king!fail.
Because kings should not be overly harsh, and parents should not be overly indulgent. Discipline and love... are both appropriate for kings and for fathers.
There is much leeway for interpreting Odin's character, because he's not big on explaining himself. And therefore his intentions and motives are up for grabs. But even with the most generous interpretation of Odin... he made some big parenting mistakes. Mainly with Loki, but also with Thor. Mind you, Asgardian culture as a whole isn't that great either, considering how utterly racist they are. At least, racist against Jotuns, Dark Elves, and Humans. I don't think we're told much about the relations with Light Elves, Vanir, or Dwarves. Which is worse: being called a monster, or being called a goat?
