For the base, I used this tile which I had made with GIMP just using layers and differences (like I explain here). Then, to turn it into a hypnotic whirl, I just did the following repeatedly:
1) duplicate layer, rename it
2) do "whirl and pinch" 90 degrees
for about three layers, and then I duplicated layers and moved them so that it was a reverse stack to get the movement back to the base image, and then I did the same with -90 degrees, and then I saved it as a GIF animation. Which I then found was too large, so I reduced colours and size until it was under the 40K LJ limit.
