FIC: By Any Other Name
Title: By Any Other Name
Universe: Doctor Who
Words: 8500
Yet another "Parting of the Ways" AU, involving pocket watches, Jack's two-year gap in his memory, Romana, faithful bodyguards, Rose, self-sacrifice... and stuff. And no Bad Wolf.
Written for the Finish-a-thon 2007
( fake cut to story )
(I've given up on my polishing-betas getting back to me, so here 'tis. Maybe there will be a revised version later)

(Once again: You are brilliant for putting this fic-a-thon on! Thank you so much for your work!)

It sort of is maybe spoilery perhaps. It's set during the last episode of S1, so definitely spoilery for that. Since it's AU, it doesn't make any plotty references to S2 or S3, BUT it does make use of some concepts from S3, so you might consider it spoilery for S3, or you might not.

Anaesthesia (all Nine, all the time... sort of)
Necessity (my first "Parting of the Ways" AU, strongly featuring Rose, but with absolutely no spoilers for S2 or S3, since I wrote it before I'd seen them)
Seeking Lethe (Nine has a drink... with Zaphod Beeblebrox)

I kind of want to cry for Jackie and Mickey, for loss and pride in them, helping her--because she has to do this, both of her have to do this, and they understand that--while knowing they're going to lose her.

Thank you!
I was able to follow most of it with only secondhand familiarity with the canon--I think the only place I really got lost was the game show thing at the end, and I'm guessing this had something to do with how the Daleks got into position.
I'm impressed that you dared to read it when you hadn't seen the episode in question. I'm glad it mostly made sense anyway. 8-)
I think I got... not exactly a chill when Romana-Rose gave her new tonguetwister name, but kind of a vicarious chill, thinking of how the Doctor might have felt on hearing that proclaimed.
That was one of my favourite bits, though it wasn't one of the ones I'd planned ahead, but when I got to that part, it just flowed...

True loyalty, yes, true friends.

Perhaps I should clarify. I've never seen any episode. This rarely stops me from reading a fic that sounds otherwise interesting. *grin* I've started enough series in the middle that I'm reasonably comfortable reading stories that assume a certain level of knowledge I haven't got.
Although in this case, I also read your earlier story Necessity, which I think is actually what introduced me to the plot of the episode.

Yeah, "Necessity" had more details about "Parting of the Ways" in it. This one I didn't feel the need to say as much.

As for this, the main thing I have to say is that your Romana voice sounds very much like her, I think, even when she's half-Rose.
I do think I've found one typo, while you're waiting for your betas:
The first bomb had fallen on Europa when the last connection was made.
Is that meant to be Europe, or are the Daleks starting their attack with Jupiter? :)

I know, it's oddly amusing, yes.

No, it's meant to be the Year 200,000's name for Europe. I checked the episode; Lynda definitely says "Europa" when she's talking about Europe. The other continents have slightly different names too.
To quote from the transcript:
So, not a typo, no.

I too am very amused that all three of us wrote people-in-other-people's-heads stories.

Thank you! I'm just feeling sort of frustrated, that it's just missing something, I don't know what.
I love the blended name Romanarosedvoratrelundartyler
It was originally just going to be "Romana-Rose Tyler, last President of Gallifrey", but I realized when I came to that bit that she would really express her selfness by blending her whole name to show her whole self.
found the resolution very satisfying
I know I left a dangling plot-thread regarding Jack's missing two years, but I really don't know what happened, and I don't know how he could find out, either.
I also liked your Jackie and Mickey who were spot-on in voice and reaction to Romana-Rose.
Thanks! That stuff was the hardest to write, because they weren't the "exciting" bits.

The logic behind Rose and Jack's different decisions felt very *them* too.
Yeah. Jack likes who he is, and wants to stay that way. Not that Rose doesn't like who Rose is but... actually, when you think about it, what both those decisions have in common is a desire to embrace the universe. Rose becomes more by being Romana-Rose, while Jack can't be certain that the Time Lord Ansenbrin will be as much of a "citizen of the universe" as Jack is. After all, Jack likes shagging everything in sight (evil grin).
