The Plumber Cometh

'Twas on a Tuesday afternoon
The plumber came to call
The cold-water tap had come off
It wouldn't turn at all
But what was more significant
Three burners on the stove
Had fallen many years before
And into darkness drove.


The plumber on the doorbell rang
A strapping youth, and bold,
He was a 'prentice, Nathan named
He came in from the cold
And kindly took his boots off
And went in stockinged feet
To deal with the cold-water tap,
He fixed it short and sweet.

And then he to the stovetop came
The burners to inspect
To lift them up and slot them in
Amazingly correct.
I tried them all, and up they lit
Except for just the one
The top and left, the switch won't budge;
It seems the job's not done.

The prentice tried in vain to fix,
he strained, he strove, he pried
He pushed and pulled to no avail
WD-40 he applied
That miracle cure of engineers
it was applied in vain
So he unscrewed all the switches
And put them back again.

Alas alack when all was done
The switches now were borked
For of the four good switches fair
'Twas only one that worked.
He had succeeded fixing one,
But in the process he
In all his eagerness and youth
Had wrecked the other three.

Not all is lost, the prentice cried,
For I have called my boss
He is a wiz at things like this
There will not be a loss.
So now I wait, with burner one
And hoping that his Master
Will soon arrive, and make things right
averting this disaster.

BTW the Master plumber did not arrive. Hopefully he will be here tomorrow.

I just called the plumber and he said he'd come round some time this morning.

I hadn't thought they did (hence why my burners had been in the dark for years), but apparently gas stoves come under the heading of "plumbing".

Not fixed yet. The plumber did not arrive yesterday afternoon. He has promised to come around this morning.

Naw, he's reliable, been using him for years. Basically he's the family plumber.
