Disney+ Recs?

So, I've signed up to Disney+, because Loki. And secondarily because I realised there were quite a few Disney movies that I didn't manage to see in the theatres that I'd quite like to see (such as Frozen II). Plus I also like Nat Geo.

But since I have it, I might as well use it while I have it, because I don't expect I will keep it for that long. So... do any of you have recs for stuff to watch?

Warning, though: I have no intention of watching WandaVision, because I gather it's in the form of a 50s sitcom similar to I Love Lucy, and I'm afraid that sitcoms hit my embarrassment squick really hard and it would be torment for me to watch it. So I won't be watching it.

But apart from that, any recs? Any particularly good Nat Geo documentaries? SFF series that aren't crap? Don't assume I've seen them already, I'm pretty bad at keeping up with stuff.

We signed up a couple of days ago so Russet can get through Mandalorian before ConStrict, I expect WandaVision will be next. Probably start it Sunday. I dropped Hulu last week because we weren't watching anything on it.

It takes about 4 eps for the series to get truly started, which is not to say that it isn't good from the beginning.  But it's Ep 3 that the story really begins.  The thing that I really like about it is that IMO, and in the opinion of LOTS of people, it is the best Star Wars story PERIOD.  While I really like A New Hope and Empire, I think Lucas is kind of overrated as a story-teller.  He created a heck of a universe, but blew it with the prequel trilogy.  The people writing and producing this series are doing one heck of a job and we're really enjoying it.

I had heard from various points that people were calling it the best SW on TV or big screen.  I didn't know anything about it except Mandalorian bounty hunter and Baby Yoda (whatever the Yoda race is), and that was all I knew.  I don't watch any of the Star Wars animated and have no interest in it.  Was not at all impressed with the recent three movies or the Solo movie, found the link movie about stealing the Death Star plans to be tepid at best.  But I have to agree: this is excellent story-telling.  It really is.  I know nothing about the Mandalorian back story, and what is being revealed (we're only 4 eps in) is becoming very interesting, which I did not expect.  First season is 8 eps, they're about 35-40 minutes each.  Not sure how many eps 2nd season is, nor their duration.

The Mandalorian

My husband enjoyed it and from what I saw of the first season (granted, I wasn't paying close attention), it looked visually stunning and well-acted for the parts I did pay attention to.

The Mandalorian is a brilliant Western set in a lovingly detailed Star Wars universe that is more like Star Wars than the actual movies!

It's that well done.

I also like the fact that they have the confidence to pace slowly at times.

A couple of Wandavision episodes would totally hit your embarrassment squick. So good call.

From memory, you’re in the US, which would mean you’re missing half the content I like on Disney+. But I did find the documentary “On Pointe” quite interesting. It’s following some students at the ballet school in New York.

Hurrah for Australia!

Okay, so documentaries:
Howard is about Howard Ashman (wrote the lyrics to Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, and then died of AIDS). I found it rather fascinating.
On Pointe, as already mentioned, was interesting.

Under-appreciated superhero stuff:
Logan (Wolverine from the X-Men, but dark and gritty)
Unbreakable (one of the few Shyamalan movies I like)
Ant-Man / Ant-Man and the Wasp (silly fun, and has fun being silly fun)
Doctor Strange (magicky stuff – better than the reviews)

TV shows with crime and snark:
Burn Notice
White Collar
Lie to Me

Animated Disney:
Coco
Moana

Movies you should see at least once:
The Martian
Die Hard
The Full Monty
Jojo Rabbit
Master and Commander

Movies I love beyond all reason, regardless of whether they're good:
Ever After
Phone Booth
The Parent Trap
The Three Musketeers
National Treasure

Also, Hamilton is on Disney+, if you're a musicals person. (This being why I got a subscription.)

Yes, but the whole point of Wandavision is what lies behind the soap.

It's not so much a soap as a mystery as to how/why the soap exists.

All the Star Wars films and series are there. I also recommend The Mandalorian which is not just excellent and loads of fun, but restored my faith in Star Wars so much that we started watching Clone Wars and Rebels (lots better than expected) and can't wait for The Mandalorian's return and its spin-offs.

I've also been catching up on the whole Marvel film canon in chronological order (must get back to that) and often come across films I loved as a kid. The original Parent Trap came up one day and we watched it - it was still great, and Greg was impressed too. I don't know if you like animated films, but all of the Pixar films are there too.

Do you like Muppets? Muppets Now.
The Mighty Ducks? Mighty Ducks Game Changers

If you haven't seen Escape to Witch Mountain, it's must watch. Kids, telepathy, telekinesis

The Cat From Outerspace (talks and has TK)

Upside Down Magic was fun.

Hamilton.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

I quite enjoyed The Secret Society of Second Born Royals

I'd suggest the Swiss Family Robinson (from the 60s) but I haven't watched it this century and I'm afraid the suck fairy came for it

Also Sky High, but OMG, watch Escape to Witch Mountain first! (Then Return From Witch Mountain if you like it.)

Don't forget 'Piper' if you haven't already seen it. And rewatch if you have, because it can stand many rewatches.
