Actually, jhall1, * to bracket entire sentences instead of italics does work--I used to frequent a Star Wars fic archive that housed only text fic and used that system (plus something else to indicate telepathy, I think).

It took a few minutes to get used to, but it worked okay.

(though I prefer italics, myself.)
