Heart With No Companion

I've just finished reading "Heart With No Companion" by Michmak
(http://www.thepetulantpoetess.com/viewstory.php?sid=2954)
It was recced on the
sshg_quiz; that's why I was reading it.
I had the feeling, all the way through, that I'd read it before, but I couldn't understand why I wouldn't have kept and reviewed such a well-written story. The characterisation was good (well, except for Harry, he was being a bit over the top in the unreasonable prat stakes) and the world-building was good (with a terribly ingenious and evil curse), and the development of the relationship between Severus and Hermione was good, and the descriptions of the world inside Hermione's head were vivid, and finally the peril had been overcome, and it looked like a happy ending...
And then the epilogue kicked me in the gut. It jerked the rug out from under me and made me cry. I hate it. I want to give the author a chocolate cake where all the sugar has been substituted with salt.
I am Not Happy.

I like "Finding His Voice" as well. That does have a happy ending.

I don't mind angst along the way... and I realize that I can cope with some unhappy endings (think "The Tattered Man") but I loathe and detest "surprise" unhappy endings; that is, in a story where it seems possible to have a happy ending, and then suddenly everything goes wrong at the last minute. That feels like a slap in the face to me.
I think part of the annoyance of "Heart With No Companion" was that I wasn't sure whether the Epilogue was supposed to be a happy ending, as if it were saying that it doesn't matter if they're living in a complete and utter delusion, so long as they're together and happy. As if lies were better than truth. (frown)

Noted.
